Causes of Carbonization

The effect of carbonization is caused by the char which is generated during the removal of the material. During laser depaneling, the laser heats the material, causing it to melt and vaporize. This 'cuts' the circuit board into smaller panels. A specific temperature threshold must not be exceeded during the process, otherwise the material will burn and release carbon. In the case of FR-4 material, for example, this limit is 350°C.

While the process of laser depaneling has improved over the years to prevent burning or harming the PCB, carbonization during laser depaneling may still occur if the incorrect laser wavelength and/or cutting parameters are used. Carbonization also occurs when the laser machines used are out-of-date or implements old laser technology.

As a measure of cleanliness, the surface resistance can be determined by means of a SIR test (Surface Insulation Resistance). For example, residues on the PCB, i.e. under, between or on the components can cause dendrite formation. These constantly growing crystal structures can lead to short circuits and associated malfunctions.
