Ceramic Printed Circuit Boards

Ever heard of Ceramic Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs)?

Unlike traditional PCBs that are made of laminated non-conductive materials, PCBs made of ceramic have excellent thermal conductivity and low coefficient of thermal expansion. In addition, ceramic material is characterized by its resistance to chemical erosion and mechanical hardness. This makes them ideal for use in the production of high-performance products.

Due to their mechanical hardness, thin ceramic PCBs tend to be brittle and fracture easily. It is recommended that such ceramic PCBs be processed via laser depaneling, instead of drilling or sawing. Laser depaneling allows for clean, precise and cost-effective cutting edges.

Ceramic PCBs are used in a variety of different applications that requires robust and reliable boards, such as:

Automotive Industry
e.g. sensor/radar modules, ESC/ABS and EMS
Medical Technology
e.g. MEMS (Micro-Electronical-Mechanical Systems)
e.g. RF modules
e.g. shockproof circuits
Consumer Goods
e.g. camera modules

Excellent Thermal Behaviour
Ceramic PCBs have an excellent thermal behavior and are particularly suitable for use under extreme temperature conditions. This includes resistance to extremely high and low temperatures as well as significant temperature variations.
Great Resistance/Robustness
In addition to their resistance to extreme temperature conditions, ceramic circuit boards are also characterized by their robustness to harsh chemical environments. Furthermore, they are much less sensitive to damage from shock and vibration.
Suitable for Multi-Layers
Ceramic PCBs are composed of a multitude of layers. This results in a special suitability for the design of multi-layer printed circuit boards, allowing passive elements to be integrated inside the circuit board.
