Types of Laser Plastic Welding: Contour Welding
The contour welding process involves moving a laser beam along the entire joint pattern, and typically only a single pass is made. The laser is often guided by a robotic arm that allows the laser to travel relative to the joint in three-dimensions. This is a critical welding method for large and three-dimensional parts.
Main applications:
Small to large components, such as chassis, car lights, and solar panels, including 3D applications and microfluid components.
Main characteristics:
- A predefined contour is traced during the welding process
- Local heating
- Process monitoring
- Handled through a scanning unit, robot, or axis
- The laser beam normally makes one pass around the joint
